The Chaldean Church has entered a new chapter. At the synod that concluded on April 12, Bishop Amel Nona was elected as the new patriarch, a position that carries a heavy responsibility for both spiritual guidance and the survival of the people in the region.

Upon assuming his office, Mar Amel Nona takes the name Mar Paul III. The name was chosen to honor Mar Paulus II Cheikho, also a native of Alqosh, who led the Church during a period of significant liturgical reforms in the latter half of the 20th century.

For the Assyrian community, the patriarch’s role is often more than just ecclesiastical. The election of Mar Paul III marks the end of a transitional period following Patriarch Louis Sako, a time characterized by many internal tensions. Expectations for the new patriarch are now high; many hope he can become a unifying force, something his predecessor was unable to achieve.
