The new language platform Syriac.io
A new digital platform, Syriac.io, aims to breathe new life into Surayt through modern technology.
Syriac.io is a new website that combines language preservation with artificial intelligence (AI) to make the language more accessible to both native speakers and beginners.
One of its main features is an AI-powered translator capable of handling several Aramaic dialects, including Classical Syriac, Western and Eastern Assyrian (Suryoyo/Surayt and Sureth).
The service includes Malfono Murad Can’s dictionary of Surayt. The dictionary was previously published in book form in 2025 and is now available in its entirety in digital format. Murad Can has previously worked with Surayt.com Aramaic Online Project, another language platform that also deserves mention in this context, as it teaches Surayt to beginners with no prior knowledge of the language.
In addition to translation, Syriac.io also offers features such as text-to-speech—albeit with minor glitches since the technology is still new—and it includes the New Testament in both Syriac and Surayt (Abdelmasih Saadi’s Malfono translation).
The developers of the site are working on an OCR system specifically designed for the Syrian language. The system will allow users to scan documents and translate them into English or any other language of their choice.
With the top-level domain .io, the developers are referencing “Input/Output” in programming. By using modern technology, the developers hope to reach a younger generation and strengthen and secure the future of the language.
